Buzzwire launches a mobile social networking site perhaps raises some valuable questions.
Firstly , does anyone really need another social networking site - I guess the answer to that will depend on what Buzzwire offer that isn't on other sites and how many people it will attract.
What follows on from that is how it will make the site pay . That is a a really difficult question for all social networking sites , and probably even more so for mobile internet ones. Research by comscore suggests around nine percent of mobile subscribers access social networking sites , but it is also a rapidly growing area.
The other question is whether or not there is a tipping point , beyond which these sites just don't work. Each site is self contained in terms of membership and non transferable. Whilst people can join any number , they need to continually check each one for activity.
Unless someone comes up with a way of aggregating memberships of sites ( ie some sort of rss type feed ) - maybe some one already has ! - there has to be a point at which people stop using them.
It will be really interesting to see how Buzzwire develops both in terms of users and more importantly content , both type and quality.
